The Naming of a Blog

One of my favorite TV shows is “Platinum Weddings”. I always loved watching these gorgeous productions being put together from start to finish. I’m amazed how someone will have a floral budget that is more than what I paid for my apartment…AND FLOWERS DIE. But it’s still fun to watch these dream weddings come together.

Now as I begin to plan my own wedding, I watch the show with a new eye. It’s no longer an escape from reality or a fantasy for 30 minutes, its homework! The assignment: How can I create my own “Platinum Wedding” on a silver budget?

Think about it, to the undiscerning eye, platinum and silver look a lot alike. Both are white colored metals and most people would not know the difference from afar. Platinum is, of course, a dense and heavy metal. It is long wearing, which is why it has become increasingly more popular for engagement rings and wedding bands. Silver on the other hand is a softer metal and is prone to oxidization. But with the right cleaner, can be made to look new again.

So that is the reason for the name of this blog. I cannot afford a platinum wedding and will not risk my financial wellbeing to even attempt it. My goal now is have a wedding with some “platinum” elements. So I will continue to watch my favorite show, but now with the thought, “How can I do that on my budget?”

My Very First Post

So here goes, my first post in the world of blogging. I have been a fan of blogs for quite some time, but never really thought that I, myself, would become a blogger. That was before I became engaged and before I started the phenomenon known as WEDDING PLANNING.

As a young girl, we all dream about our wedding day. I remember vividly watching Lady Diana Spencer marry her Prince. I was 5 years old, but I can still remember how radiant she looked, despite watching the wedding on a 13” black & white TV. But we all know how that fairytale ended, and like the rest of us, I grew up.

Now at 32 years old, I am engaged to the love of my life (more about our story in a future post). I am a Human Resources Manager for the US Headquarters of a Canadian Bank based in Miami, Florida, which in this economy, is pretty scary. I have a mortgage, credit cards, HOA fees and too many other bills to mention, so the thought of shelling out $30,000 for one night is daunting. And $30,000 in Miami is being optimistic.

I’ll be honest, part of me just wants to run off to Vegas with my fiancĂ© and get married by Elvis. But I’m afraid I’ll end up regretting that in the long run. Plus, it would devastate my mother (more about her later). We’ve also considered getting married in Hawaii, just the two of us. But as we began to price it out, we probably wouldn’t save that much money.

So here I am, blogging my joys and frustrations for all the world to see. Hopefully, the ride to happily ever after won’t be too bumpy.
